Missing DLL file

Kevin Nelson

Hello, I've been handed a problem and I'm not sure how to go about fixing
it. A friend's computer suddenly stopped booting up. She received a message
stating that the "shell32.dll file was missing or corrupt". Now I found a
site that has downloads of dll files and they have the one that she is
having a problem with. My questions: will the computer start working if I
save the file to floppy, boot with a win98 disk, copy the file to her
winnt/system32 folder? She is running win2000, can I boot with the win98
disk and copy the file from the win2000 cd to her winnt/system32 folder? Can
I boot from the win2000 cd and select repair and have it fill in what is
missing?

Thanks
Kevin

Why would you want to download this file when it's already in the
i386 folder of her Win2000 installation CD?

Your suggested solution will probably not work, for these reasons:
- Most likely her drive C: is an NTFS partition. You won't be able
to see it with a Win98 boot disk.
- The file, in its expanded form, is 2.4 MBytes in size. It won't fit
onto a floppy disk.

You might be better off by booting off her Win2000 CD, then
selecting "Repair" when prompted.

Thank you, now once again I will look like a genius. Do you know what might
corrupt or delete that particular file?

- Virus infection?
- Hacker activity?
- A glitch?

(your guess is as good as mine)

It is probably not the file that is corrupt but something that is using it that is corrupt. Like a Browser Helper Object.
