Mirroring

Hello All!

I have a situation that I need advice on. I have a customer that has a
40 gb hd with windows xp pro on it in his system. He wants me to image
his partition and put the image in a mirrored set of (2) 36 gb drives
for mirroring (backup) purposes. When he is done, all he wants is the
mirrored drives in his computer with data intact.

My questions are these:

1. Can i create the mirror with the 2 drives and then ghost the
partition into the mirror?
If so, will I need to change the boot.ini to reflect the mirror?

2. Someone told me that I have to create the mirror and then install
windows into the mirror and then resintall all of his programs and copy
his data over?

3. Does anyone have a link to instructions on the best way to
accomplish what im trying to do?

Any and ALL help is very much appreciated and Thank you in advance.

In addition, I forgot to mention that this is hardware raid using SATA Raid
on a new epox motherboard and not software raid.

Given the SATA Raid info I'd have to agree with whoever gave you the advice
about creating the RAID array first, then a clean install of XP.

Even if it was possible to achieve otherwise, which I don't think it is, the
risk of complications with any other steps outweighs the time you'd spend
re-installing the applications and transferring data. I can't guarantee it
but the transfer files and data wizard may be of use - obviously you should
have a back up of everything in case that fails.

I know it may not be the answer you'd like but it's certainly the choice I'd
make if it was my system. I don't think you need a link in such
circumstances, do you?

Hope that helps
Pete

The procedure should be in the manual... I recently installed a
promise fasttrak tx 4000. I just bought 3 more identical WD
drives (I use 0+1).
1) backed up data
2) installed the controller
3) installed the driver
4) installed the other three HDDs
5) ran the raid array utility
6) all was well

WinXP is not Win3.x. There generally is no need to reinstall
for every little glitch.

good luck
