mIRC and WinXP - Help me pls!

Hi all,

This problem has been bothering me for some time now. So I need your
help.

I can't enter mIRC channels. I use Win XP. It looks up my IdentID and
then just doesn't respond. Sometimes the Unable to Connect (connection
time out) msg comes. I have dl'd the latest version of mIRC but things
remain unchanged. It's really pissing me off. Any solutions?

Greetings,

The servers probably just can't connect to your ident server (built-in to mIRC) either
because you have a router or you have a firewall established (like the Internet Connection
Firewall). If you have a router, you'll need to forward port 113 to your computer (see
router documentation on how to do this). If you have the Internet Connection Firewall up (or
you're not sure if you do), click Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, then
Communications, then Network Connections. Right-click your connection, then click
Properties. For cable modem/broadband users, your Internet connection will usually be called
Local Area Connection. For dialup, it should be the name of your Internet Service Provider.
Click the Advanced Tab, verify the Internet Connection Firewall is in fact turned on, and
then click the Settings tab. Click the Add button and then in the Service Settings, type in
the following:

For Description enter Ident, for Name or IP address enter 127.0.0.1, for both External and
Internal ports enter 113. Verify TCP is selected and click OK. Then click OK.

Then try logging onto an IRC server again.

I have been runnng MIRC on my WinXP HE machine for some
time now have not had any problems. If you are not
experiencing any other communications problems [like, net
browsing, email and such] your TCP/IP stack and connect
would appear to be ok. You may have to uninstall MIRC in
safe mode and then delete any references of it in the
Registry [you might want to back it up first]. Reboot the
machine and the re-install the latest version. This type
of approach has worked on othter software that has given
me problems when everything else seems to be working.

Jonathan, I don't use the WinXP firewall. So I am not quite sure what is casuing it.
