MiniDisc USB Software ... maybe OT

D

dw

maybe there is someone in the NG who can help on this....

I bought my daughter a Sony MiniDisc Recorder/Player for Christmas.
It was advertised as 'net ready' for recording MP3s etc.
Fine, ok, no probs .... except it turns out the software application
('SonicStage') only supports Windows XP, 2000 etc ... and not 98, which
is what my old creaking computer runs.

I have started looking for an equivalent or an earlier version that
supports 98.

Does anyone on the NG know any remedies to this problem?

I sympathize with DW, and it is not that her Windows 98 operating system
is old and creaky. Billie Gates purposefully designed ever-increasingly
complex versions for NO OTHER PURPOSE than to gain total control
of the universe by making it utterly dependant upon Microsoft, so that he
and his employees achieve staggeringly unimaginable wealth. Further,
some other similar industries .. like Sony ... will design programming such
that it will not work on older operating systems. These are called mutual
assistance deals between MS and the likes of Sony.

Lastly, I regret to suggest to you that the MiniDisc premise is a failed
one.
For the same money, or little more, you might have invested in one of
portable harddrive machines that are self contained, many of which will
permit use of one of the popular memory-card formats.

That's laughable. Anywho, I believe there is no known solution for your
problem, D.W. The included Sony software can indeed be unfriendly (for a
variety of reasons). The lack of a decent recorder/computer connection led
me to steer away from MD in favor of CD-Rs with MP3s. Cheaper, that's for
sure.

Many thanks people for the feedback on this.
It is a shame that Sony does not provide bare drivers and supporting
docs for those freeware coders out there...

Through a Google search I did find 'FreeMD' which seems to be heading
that way but seesm to be in a very early stage.
