Please help with external USB MP3 player in XP Pro

M

Mark G.

Posted on another site regarding the difficulty I am having with trying to
get my MP3 player to recognize correctly on my machine with XP Pro SP2. Is a
bit long, but I am just going to post what I posted there Creative Labs
site) and hopefully someone will be able to provide some answers or insight
at the best?? Would be much appreciated! So here it is:

Okay, I have tried various methods to get my 1gig Zen Nano Plus to show up
correctly within Win XP Pro. I installed the software, then plugged the
device in and it shows loading drivers, but just keeps going and going and
never doing anything until I finally have to just pull the device out of the
USB port. I even downloaded the newer Creative mass storage device drivers
to no avail. I then uninstalled it all and tried the whole process over
several times but still no luck. So what is happening here is that everytime
I plug the device into the USB port (and I have tried multiple USB ports) it
just keeps pretending like it is installing drivers but never does anything.
Although I do several times get those pop ups that say "installing mass
storage device" and/or "installing Zen Nano". I did have it working when I
originally got it yesterday afternoon, but since, especially since I updated
the firmware to the newest one, it does not work correctly. I did have a
thought that maybe it was the firmware, but see my girlfriend has one of
these two but hers is the 512mb model. So I plug mine with the newest
firmware into her computer, and it sees it fine, but in mine, nope, not at
all. Is not the computer as the computer see many other USB devices. Plus
while typing this, I tried one other thing, I plugged hers into my computer,
and it loaded the drivers and all was good to go from the start. So it seems
mine is somehow messed up. But what is confusing is that her machine can see
mine fine. I did have a bit of a problem when updating the firmware on mine
at the point where it asks to go into recovery mode. In fact, I had to do it
2 or 3 times. Again, I thought that might have had something to do with it,
but if that was the case, then her machine would be able to see it, right?
Is the newer firmware not as stable as the old? Mine could have corrupted on
just my machine somehow. Who knows, but maybe someone here???? So, with all
of this said, what do you folks think? I am thinking of exchanging this for
another one. Sorry for the long posts, but wanted to provide enough detail.
Thanks much and hopefully someone can help me here.

The thing throwing me off is while I can not see the 1gig Zen Nano plus of
mine, I can see my girlfriend's 512mb one. I highly doubt that it has
anything to do with the capacity of the thing. I even went today and
returned one and got another of the same one, but I STILL have the problem.
So now we know it is the computer, but still, why can I see one and not the
other? This is really frustrating! Anyone got anymore to add? Would be much
appreciated!

Okay, I want to add more to this in hopes of getting some more help. Hoping
to getting this to work. Now I am no newbie on computers, I know computers
fairly well.

Anyhow, outside of the stuff I listed previously, I also restored to a state
prior to ever plugging this device in with no luck whatsoever. Other than
the oblivious, one thing that prompted me to restore was that after
receiving this and the fact that I also have a Creative Audigy 2 card with
the front port I decided to check for updates for firmware, hardware, etc...
for the Creative items that are on my machine. I used that online auto
updater. It found a whole bunch of things like an update for the Audigy card
software, updates to Media Source, and again, quite a number of things. I
went ahead and installed all of the updates. So again, because I did all of
this, I thought that maybe there was a conflict somewhere and that restoring
may help in this issue.

Also, as I mentioned earlier, I can see and use my girlfriend's 512mb Zen
Nano Plus(same device, but less capacity). When I plugged hers in, in the
system tray it recognized it, installed it, then said ready to use (after
reboot it said). Well you know when you plug in an external USB device or
something of that nature and you get that little symbol in the system tray?
Then if you want to remove the device, it is recommended that you
right-click that icon and select "safely remove hardware". Then it shows the
devices connected and you select the one you want to remove. Then you click
stop, and another dialog box pops up and shows:

-Creative Zen Nano Plus

-USB Mass Storage Device

-And lastly, generic volume (and the associated drive letter)

Well with mine, when I plug it in I does the same thing as hers initially,
but then keeps going and going as mentioned at beginning of thread, but
never really gets anywhere. Well if I right click on the icon in the system
tray and go to properties, it shows all as itemized above except for the
"generic volume". So something is lacking that.

Again, I have tried everything in the book. Tomorrow I will also call tech
support. Not sure if they will help or not. I am hoping that by spelling all
of this out even further that someone can help. I googled USB generic
volume, but could not find anything to assist. Not sure if this problem is
associated with that or not. And gain, as mentioned earlier, I did do a
restore to earlier in time to no avail..

Also, I should mention if not having mentioned before, that when I initially
got this and did not do anything updates, installs, or anything, just
plugged it in and all, it worked fine. It wasn't until after I did the
updates to the firmware on the device and with the other items that this
problem started. But again, as I said earlier, I exchanged the device for
another today at the store and also tried pluggingback in after a asystem
restore all with no luck. Just wanted to add this so that there is a
complete and clear picture here. Help? Thanks once again!

After reading some of the other posts and seeing what they had to suggest, I
decided to check the "Portable Media Devices" under control panel. This Zen
nano Plus does not show up in there when plugged in! Also, I downloaded the
following from the Microsoft site as it seems it may have helped some of the
others, but still no luck. The file being:

FIX: Updates to the Windows Media Device Manager

Just wanted to add this to aid in possibly helping me out here. Seems like
DM, SSR, and a few others are quite helpful here and hopefully they can get
my deice running on my machine the way it should! Thanks again!

So helpfully someone can come up wqith something from all of this to give me
a hand in getting this corrected. Thanks again!

Hi Mark,

Usually, installing the software is unnecessary for the drive to be
recognized. I would suggest that you uninstall it and then run a System
Restore to a point prior to the initial installation (if you can). See if
the drive installs ok. If not, run the steps here:

Have you run through the USB troubleshooter?
Do other USB devices work?

Yes, other devices work. I have returned this and still get the same thing
on the new one, so it is something with XP Pro. And yes, I did run through
the trouble shooting guide!

Hi Mark,

If other devices work, then the problem isn't WinXP, it's the hardware you
are attaching to the system. I don't think there is much else I will be able
to help you with, as your post at Creative is likely to have a better chance
of getting a precise response. The only things I would suggest to try would
be to a) try installing it on another system to see if the problem is
duplicated and b) uninstall any Creative software and then attach it to see
if it is recognized properly as a mass storage device using the WinXP
drivers.

Did you ever resolve this issue? I have been having the same problem with a
new Zen Nano Plus. Like you, I worked with Creative and determined the issue
must be with Windows XP. The one item left to try is to reinstall
usbstor.inf drivers from the original XP disk. But I am curious if you
solved the problem.
