Migration to new PC mess with Outlook 2003

Dennis

I migrated Outlook 2003 from my old XP Pro system to my new Vista 64 system and
am having many problems. I found instructions for this on the web/newsgroups
and thought I did it correctly but apparently not. I copied the Outlook.pst
file from the old to new PC and replaced the Outlook.pst on the new computer. I
will try to describe the problems but the good news is all my old emails are on
the new Outlook and my contacts are sort of. I did have to manually set up my
email accounts on the new Outlook.

Problem 1 :

In the all folders view on the left side of Outlook I see multiple displays of
personal folders. The info I found on the web to do a Close Personal Folders
does not work because that option can not be selected. This is only cosmetic so
if I have to live with this oh well.

Problem 2 :

When I click on Data File Management under the folders no file shows in the
Outlook data files display. I try to add the one it is using and Outlook locks
up and has to be restarted in Safe Mode the next time. This means I can not
select Settings and can not do a compress so eventually I will run out of space.
It is very strange that Outlook is obviously using a data file because I can see
my emails and send and receive new ones but no data file is displayed.

Problem 3 :

If I click on contacts on the left Personal Folders I see all my contacts and
all looks good. The problem is when composing a new email when I click on To:
it comes up in Outlook Address book and says "No entries in Address Book". The
pull down shows

Outlook Address Book
Contacts
Contacts

If I select the first Contacts Outlook says Address list could not be displayed.
The contacts folder associated with this address list could not be opened. If I
select the second Contacts in the pull down then I see my contacts and I can
send a email as normal.

I would like to know if this can be repaired and if so how I should do it. If it
can not be repaired I would like to know how to completely remove Outlook 2003
from my new PC and start over. I did remove it via the Control Panel and
reinstall but that did not help.

Sorry for my ignorance. I appreciate suggestions.

How did you migrate?

With this much corruption in your profile, its best to make a new profile -
after you add the accounts to the new profile, go back into the profile and
add your old pst as the default delivery location, before opening outlook.

No where in these newsgroups have you seen this posted as the correct
approach. Never overwrite a PST with another of the same name. You can
damage the mail profile that way.

By overwriting the PST you had, you've damaged the profile and now have a
"ghost" folder set. See this for ways to address that:

Thank you Brian & Diane for your replies. I will read the info on creating a
new profile and go from there. I have a question about connecting my PST to the
new profile. Can I use the PST that is on my new PC or do I have to go back to
the one I copied from my old PC. The reason I ask is I have been sending and
receiving emails on the new PC and the copy from the old PC is from last week.
If I have to lose a weeks worth of emails oh well but I would rather not if
possible. I don't want to take any shortcuts this time, doing so didn't work
out so well last time.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks again for the info, it worked as expected and all is OK now. I do have
to reenter my email accounts but it is working fine with my primary account.
