Migrate Outlook 2003 to Windows Vista mail

I cannot use my pst files in Windows Vista, how do I transfer my Outlook
2003 data to Windows Vista? Office 2007 Student does not have Outlook
anymore.

You have to do on a machine that has Outlook. There is no way known to
import directly from a pst file to Windows Mail unless you have Outlook
installed.

You can take an old machine with XP and Outlook and export the messages to
OE on that machine and then import from those exported messages into
WinMail, but there is no direct way unless Outlook is installed on the Vista
machine.

I have dine it with outlook 2002.

First I exported to a windows .csv file which in an option in the
exporting process then I imported that .csv file into winmail again there is
an option on the import facility to do this.

Bit long winded but it worked.

There is no way to get the *.pst files from OL into Windows Mail. You need OL installed. I just tried your way on 1 of my test machines and it does not work at this end as expected. Are you sure it was Outlook not Outlook Express?

Hey Peter,

I think the Outlook Address book was the thing that exports as csv files.
Not the messages. Never heard of messages going out as such.

Here's also a reference for Outlook:

If you saved your .pst file, just install the trial version of Office 2007
(choos only Outlook) on your Vista system.
Import your .pst file.
Start Vista Mail and Import from Outlook.
Uninstall trial Office 2007

That's an excellent workaround.

Soory for the delay in replying....

I may have been a little too brief on the last message.

Install MS outlook 2002 on vista import your old .pst files that you saved
when you changed from the old XP (you did didn't you????)

Export the folders as .csv files ....I have this option on my copy of MS
Outlook 2002.

Then import the .csv files to Winmail on vista.

I have done this twice for my profile and my wife's it imported the message
folders and the contact lists.

Outlook Express doesn't use *.pst files.

You can import Outlook 2003 into Outlook Express. That assumes you have not
upgraded that computer to Vista. Then use a migration tool to import from
OE to WinMail.

I have tried the method of Exporting to a .csv file and then importing that csv file into Contacts of Vista. It runs long enough to import 7 contacts and comes up showing "Error in importing......" Help!

I suceeded in importing all the mail items but not the Contacts so how do I get just the contacts into Win Mail now?

Please help retain my sanity!!!

Can you explain the import process in more detail. When I click to import from Outlook, I get a MAPI Client error. Everything else I click doesn't give me the option of pulling in the .csv file.

I have struggled with this for a month. I want to like Vista, but this email problem is nerve-wracking.

I've been reading as many posts as I can find and finally tried exporting from OL 2002 via the .csv extension.
I have both OL 2002 and Windows Mail installed on a new Vista Ultimate build. Too many horror stories about Office 2007 compatibility so installed my old copy of Office XP(2002).
If you're just looking to import your contacts into Windows Mail, export only your Contacts from OL 2002 into a folder using .csv. On my Vista OS I got the "Map Fields" dialogue. Never seen that one before but never needed to use the .csv extension before either.
Select the fields you want (or use) from your OL 2002 Contacts entries. If you haven't used it before (like me) it may take a bit of playing to decide which fields you need.
I went to Windows Contacts to make the transfer though Windows Mail has an "Import Windows Contacts" feature under "File", "Import".
Start your "Import" process in Windows Contacts or Windows Mail and browse to the folder with your .csv contacts.
You'll have to run through the "Map Fields" again during the import process but when all was said and done the new "Windows Contacts" work great.
Now I just have to find how to work from two different Contact folders. I use one for work and one for personal (at least I used to) contacts.
Hope this helped.

Ooops...forgot to ask...
Anyone know if I can differentiate e-mail "Read Receipts" from other messages in Windows Mail? In OL 2002 I could route them to a different folder automatically and keep them BUT keep them out of the way.
THANKS
