MIDI Cannot be heard

I just finished trying to adjust the volume on my system and found that the
volume was extremely low. I ran Check It Diagnostic and it reported that the
midi test passed even though I could hear no sound. Any ideas on what might
be causing these problems. (I hope this is the correct conference to post
this.) Thanks in advance.

Have you had it running normally and now it has stopped working correctly,
or is this the first time you have used it?
When you said that you ran diagnostics - which ones? Also is it an onboard
sound card or an additional card like a Soundblaster? What does the Directx
sound tests show?
