Microsoft XP login problems

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could help me...

Whilst trying to solve an install issue with Norton Internet Security 2007,
I was directed by Symantec to access the System Registry using regedit and
change certain settings. However, whilst I was doing this (I was in the
H_KEY_Current User Key) all the user profiles (if that's the right term?) on
the left hand side of the editor box disappeared.

When I then rebooted my pc, I was presented with a "User Environment" error
message that read:

Windows cannot load the user's profile but has logged you on with the
default profile for the system. DETAIL - Access is Denied.

When the pc does start Windows, I then cannot get into any programs or
control panel (for user accounts) or even system information (so that I can
e-mail Microsoft as I cannot even get to my Product ID!). The default user
does not seem to have any permission to access anything!

Is there anyway I can solve this short of reinstalling Windows XP?

If not, is there a procedure I should follow for the reinstall?

Many thanks for any help you can give me.

Can you do a system restore to the day before this happened ?

Can you do a system restore to the day before this happened ?

Unfortunately not. I cannot access system restore.

Whenever I try to access any program including system restore, I am
presented with the following or similar error message:

C:\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe
Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have
the appropriate permissions to access the item.

I'm guessing that I don't have the required permissions as that is probably
what I accidentally deleted. I also cannot get back into regedit either for
the same reason.

Is there anything I can try to fix the problem?
