Word is a separate product from Microsoft. Buy from a local computer
store as a stand-alone product, or part of Office.

The least expensive way to get WORD is to buy the WORKS
SUITE. The version of WORD included is fully functional,
but will not count as an upgrade path to the OFFICE upgrade.
The best way to get WORD for your daughter is to buy the MS
OFFICE Standard edition for Student and Teachers. It also
has license restrictions and will not qualify to buy an
upgrade to a non-restricted license for OFFICE. But it is
less than $150 and includes WORD, EXCEL, PowerPoint and
Outlook. You can find a Professional version for about $170
I know it is available from www.newegg.com

Neither Windows XP nor any other version of Windows has ever come
with Word or with any other significant application software.

If you want Word, you need to buy it, either alone, as part of
Microsoft Office, or, most inexpensively, as part of Microsoft
Works Suite.

Greetings --

Neither the Microsoft Office application suite, nor any of its
individual component applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access,
Outlook, etc.), have _ever_ been "part" of *any* Windows operating
system. They are, and always have been, separate applications, that
must be purchased and installed separately.
