Do a search for winword.exe and create a new shortcut to it.

What you had on the desktop or in the Start menu was not Microsoft Word, but
a shortcut to it. These are pointers to the program, not the program itself.

The program executable file itself is called winword.exe. You can find the
file (search for it) and double-click it to start Word. If you no longer
have a desktop shortcut to it, and want one back, *right*-drag winword.exe
to the desktop. When you release the right mouse button, choose "Create
shortcut here."

On the other hand, if winword.exe itself is actually missing (unlikely),
you'll need to reinstall Word from the original media.

It's normally in Program Files > Microsoft Office.
