Microsoft Word-Editiing Text

I use word for individual document as well as my text editor when using
Microsoft Outlook (e-mail).
When I try to embolden the text, I highlight the relevant words or
sentances, click the 'B' icon to embolden that text and the whole document
is made bold, not just the text highlighted. This also happens when trying
to change the colour or underline the text.
When using word to write a letter and I try the above it thows the format
all over the place by putting everything to the left margin.
I have tried 'detect and repair' on many occasions but that does not work.
I would be grateful for any suggestions

yeh, that is weird. It might be due to
low resources available.

As a test, i suggest you download that open source
freeware called OpenOffice.org 2.0 and see
if your results are the same. It will be easier
for deducing where the problem may be....
