Microsoft Wireless Mouse Woes- Wheel TWITCHY!

I put this in the Games forum as well, then saw this forum and thought it would be appropriate here as well (sorry, Admins if this is a problem)

I just got one of the new wirelsss Microsoft mice (the one with the side-rocking wheel), and I love it for desktop work, Word, etc

But..

Using the wheel is TERRIBLE! It's so sensitive and twitchy that when trying to game it's practcally useless. For example, I like to put the "Weapons Switch" function in FPS games like UT2k3 and Max Payne 2 on the Up/Down wheel. WIth my corded USB Optical mouse, every "click" on the wheel roll changes one weapon. But with the cordless USB mouse it changes like 6-8 weapons! I've seen this behavior when scrolling down web pages too- instead of a set ammount, it can scroll large amounts all at once

I've tried disabling "wheel acceleration" in the Mouse properties and twiddling with settings, but nothing seems to help. Anyone else seen this or am I just doomed to have to keep a "game mouse" and a "Windows mouse" plugged in at all times?

I read in these newsgroups where one of the Windows updates causes problems
with scrolling. It causes exactly the condition you are experiencing.
Unfortunately, I disremember which one it is. Maybe others will chime in
with the pertinent information.

Well, I install all the newest updates, so maybe that's it. Doesn't Microsoft tech read these threads? I think I've seen sigs that suggest they might- if so, is there a support white paper out for this issue? Because I'm thinking of returning the mouse and exchanging it for a Logitech if I can't iron this out... Thanks!! =)

You may also want to try changing some advanced XP settings. Open the
"Mouse" Control Panel. On the multi-tabbed dialog box that follows,
click the "Hardware" tab. Choose the "Properties" button.

Another multi-tabbed dialog box should appear. Choose "Advanced
Settings". Now, click on the "?" icon on the top-right corner of this
window and then click the text next to "Sample Rate", "Wheel Detection",
and "Input Buffer Length". These provide helpful hints to configuration
tweaks that may solve your mouse problems. Performs the tweaks as
desired and needed, but make sure to write down your original settings
in case something goes wrong.

When you are done tweaking, press "OK" to close the dialog boxes.

That won't help as it affects some people with Logitech mice also (-:

My son's computer, for instance! Funny though! Not all screens are affected
by it. Some will scroll 3-4 pages with every click of the wheel.
