Microsoft Windows XP Start up problems

I have re-installed Microsoft Windows XP twice on my
computer. It works perfectly for about a week and then
when I try to start my computer XP will not start up.
The only screen I see is the Windows XP screen and the
scrolling bar on the bottom. The scroll sometimes stops
and sometimes continues indefinitely. If I leave the
computer on it does not move from this screen. I have
therefore re-installed the XP but after a week I have the
same problem. Anyone have any suggestions. I tried to
fix XP by going step by step through the start up help
menu. Turning off devices, reinstalling video drivers,
etc does not work. I am thinking of buying a virus
program. Does this seem indicative of a virus?

While you certainly should have an antivirus application
installed, this particular problem doesn't sound virus-related. It
sounds like defective hardware. Have you tested your RAM?
