Microsoft Web Site Problem?

I'm not sure on this one:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/843499/en-us

The server or proxy was not found (Error=800C0005)

Doing a google search on 800c0005 seems to indicate the problem is caused by
a dll not being registered. The question is which one?

Will have to get back to you later. Somewhere in my favorites, I have
reference to a utility that examines Internet connection problems and
registration issues and fixes them. Sorry, I have time constraints right now.

Hi again:

The utility I was looking for can be found by doing a Google search on:
dial-a-fix

Big Caveat: I have never used it. I don't know if it is applicable;
however, desperate times call for desperate measures (I probably should give
credit to the author but I'm not sure who quoted it).

Thank you Mr Cat ;-)

You are welcome. I hope we can get a resolution to this problem. I'm
somewhat outside my area of expertise and any additional help would be
appreciated.

Hi Mr Cat,

If BMAN is with SP2, that will make it eazy.,

In my 3rd post, the first thing said, go to Windows Update, in this way he
can get SP2, and in the midle of the post, is the reference to DAF.

I like to refer the user to here:
Good post

in this way is easy to aproch the problems, with all the facts in hand, BMAN
have other post with the statetment he is on SP1.

Service Pack 2.

I ran the Dial-a-fix utility, and even though it's a pretty nice little
util, it didn't fix my problem.

I also heard back from Microsoft Support, and they gave me the link to
download Defender directly. I would only get that "cannot display the web
page" error in IE, so I had a buddy download the MSI file and send it to me.
So I was finally able to get it installed. I will bug the Microsoft people
about this and post a fix - if they find one.

Thanks for all your help guys!

Sorry Engel, I didn't mean to confuse you. The SP1 reference in the
Microsoft Money forum was about the new Service Pack 1 release for Microsoft
Money 2007. For Windows XP, I'm on SP2. I'm not sure if my issues with
Defender and Money is the same. I would say no, but I got a lot farther with
digging into it on this forum because (like I mentioned before) you guys rock
with the help, where on the Money forum the tech help is generally pretty
sparse from what I've seen.

Sorry bman, I've run out of ideas on this problem. Let me know if you ever
get a resolution for the problem. Thanks.

Have you gone through this knowledgebase article to attempt to fix the
problem with Microsoft site access?

Error message when you try to access a Web site in Internet Explorer: "Page
Cannot Be Displayed"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326155

Until you know that you can reach the necessary sites, I'd assume that the
problems relate to this basic issue, since nothing else will work if the
sites are inaccessible.

Mr Cat,

I would be careful about drawing any conclusions about error code 800c0005
from a search.

The meaning of the error code depends on its source. I have found several
defintions in the Windows SDK, the most likely of which is the URL monikor
error INET_E_RESOURCE_NOT_FOUND. You could try searching about that.
However, I think all you'll find is that it is telling you it couldn't find
resource at that the URL or there was an error downloading from it, which is
what you already see interactively.

I guess re-registering urlmon.dll couldn't hurt ("regsvr32 urlmon.dll").

Good idea! Make sure you do everything this article says. It also has a list
of DLLs to register, which you were asking about.

I finally got the issue solved! Here's the way basic oversimplication:
Turns out that my router/modem did not want to give my machine(s) the correct
DNS stuff. So, when my computer wanted the address for
download.microsoft.com, it couldn't do it. I had to enter the DNS addresses
into my computer's TCP/IP configuration and now it works perfectly, along
with other things that didn't work, including the ActiveX install at that
pesky Windows Validation page.

So, thanks for the immense amount of support from everyone here!

Thank you so much for the response, but I am a very curious Cat! I'm
wondering if the problems you encountered might apply to some issues I've
seen in other forums. Did you empirically determine the solution or is it a
problem with the firmware or settings in the modem/router. Still somewhat
confused by your answer. I guess I'm hungry for a little more information.
