For some reason, when I click on Start | All Programs | Microsoft Update or
Start | All Programs | Windows Update, nothing happens. However, if I open
IE and select Tools | Windows Update, it goes to the site and works just
fine. What's causing this? Any ideas?

Right click on Windows Update on the Start Menu | Click Properties |
Click the Shorcut tab | This is what should be in the Target box...

%SystemRoot%\system32\wupdmgr.exe

wupdmgr.exe is the Windows Update Manager for NT.

I have no idea about Microsoft Update, I do not use it.

The target box reads exactly as it should. It just won't run when I click on
the shortcut. It won't run even if I try to run wupdmgr.exe directly.

I figured it out. I had been trying out IE7 and apparently it didn't
properly uninstall itself. I did a sytem restore to a checkoint prior to its
installation and all is well.

Glad you figured it out.

It would have taken me 40 years to figure out that you had installed and
then uninstalled IE7. ;-)
