Microsoft Update Site- Cant Verify that windows xp is authentic

after 4 problem free years.....
had to reload windows xp and start everything "new" again...
this is xp- no service packs have been installet YET... it was my FIRST
intention.
not 5 mins into my first online visit to ms upgrades.... im already recieving
critical error message pop ups from messenger.....
saying i need to fix registry- go to yada yada web site to clean files....

I succeeded in activating windows xp....
i also seemed to download the newest update software.....

When i clicked on get newest upgrades:
Microsoft sent back message saying that it cant verify my version is
authentic.....
and to go fish....
lol.
can any one solve the great puzzle.... placed in front of me?
To say i would be appreciative, is an understatement.

Then re-boot Windows. Does this solve your problem?

Do not access the Internet without a firewall installed. You are infected by
now. Pre SP2 versions of Windows do not have a firewall turned on by
default. You will need to "reload windows xp and start everything "new"
again...". This time do not connect to the Internet before you have either
SP2 or a firewall installed. You can download SP2 at the following link.

Do this on another computer and burn it to a CD. After reloading Windows and
before connecting to the Internet for any reason insert the CD and install
SP2. Alternatively install a 3rd party firewall or if you have a broadband
connection use a router.

I'll say this again. Do not connect to the Internet for any reason until you
have a firewall in place. If you are on broadband and do not have a router
physically unplug the cable between your computer and the modem. You will be
infected before the Windows install is even finished.
