microsoft update corrupt file

E

EOB

I have windows XP and a dial up connection for the internet. The automatic
update started and it took 10 hours to download. I think my computer went
into hibernation during this process. When I restarted my computer the
download started but the message was a corrupt file. I cancelled the
installation but each time I turn on my computer this file starts installing.
How can I delete this download and stop it installing. Any help will be
appreciated. I am a fairly good amature computer user so please make
instruction simple thank you

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)

I'd suggest that a very large download indicates something like SP3, and it
might be better to not allow AU to install that, especially via dailup.
Get a friend to download the full install, copy to CD and install from
that.

Also, because it's a dialup connection, it's probably better to leave it off
and manually check for updates during online sessions intended for this
purpose.

There are a number of contexts where use of Automatic Updates is not
appropriate.
