Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit problem

Hello all,

I'm currently trying out the Shared Computer Toolkit on one of the
machines on our domain and I've had a slight problem with it. It
reboots itself every morning when it first starts up (hard for me to
say if it's the same number of times every day as I'm not always here,
but it does happen every day).

I haven't been able to work out why it's doing this - there's a blue
screen that appears randomly after login informing the user that the
machine will restart in a few minutes. After a few minutes, it
restarts and closes everything, which is proving really popular with
our users as you can imagine! It does this another three or four times
before finally settling down for the day.

The only thing I can see in the event logs that could be causing this
is that there's a single Event ID #49 from ftdisk at 09:57 every day,
but I think this is after the PC has finished going through the
rebooting procedure.

Event id: 49
Source: FTDISK
Description: "Configuring the Page file for crash dump failed. Make
sure there is a page file on the boot partition and that is large
enough to contain all physical memory."

Just in case this is something to do with the problem, I've followed
the advice at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/226448, although we
haven't added any RAM to the machine and the problem has only started
happening since I installed the toolkit. I've tried letting Windows
manage its own swap file or using a manually configured one, but the
error message still appears and the machine still restarts in the
mornings.

I figured the problem could have something to do with Windows Disk
Protection and Windows Update, so I've tried updating Windows and
saving the changes upon first boot, but it still goes through its
restarting procedure a few times once I've done this.

I haven't used the toolkit on the other machines yet as this restarting
thing would be a nightmare if they were all doing it - does anyone have
any idea what could be behind this? The only other thing I can think
of is that it could be something to do with our anti-virus software
(AVG), as I haven't been able to track down an update script for it
yet, so I have to update manually every now and then.

Please let me know if you have any ideas regarding this, it's been
driving me batty for a while now.

Many thanks,

Dave.

While you might get an answer here (and not from me, sorry), you will
have a better chance of getting expert attention if you post in the
newsgroup for the Shared Computer Toolkit:

Thanks for that Malke, didn't realise there was one!

All the best,

Dave.

I believe your problem is that you are running out of space on the temporary
storage drive - if you are using Disk Protect. When it runs out of "swap"
space, the machine automatically restarts.

To allow changes to be made during a system session and not saved after
reboot (using Disk Protect in the Shared Computer Toolkit), all of the
changes are saved to an empty part of the disk that Disk Protect claims. When
you select to save the settings per reboot (with Disk Protect still enabled),
the changes are merged at boot up.

When the temporary space fills up and changes can no longer be temporarily
held, the computer automatically restarts (with a warning). To me, this
sounds like your issue.
