I have received the Microsoft Security CD. I think in the
information that I gave when I filled out the required
info that my OS is XP pro. I am volunteering and helping
with computer and may have to do dirty install of Windows
98 SE. Can I use the CD for just the Windows Updates or
would the updates be specific for XP on the cd? Reason I
would like to use CD is that with a modem it takes while
to download Windows Updates.

Thanks for information.
Susan

The cd works with XP, ME, 2000, 98, 98SE. Put it in and let it autorun.

The Security CD is for all versions of Windows from 98 up to XP.

After the CD runs there will be 3 small downloads, so be
sure to go to Windows Update after the CD runs. [W98se]
There is also a firewall on a second disk.

And about three re-boots.

Also the firewall is a timed trial version, I think it expires in a year.

That is true, I had Zone Alarm already downloaded so
installed that. But it is nice that MS sends anti-virus and
firewall software so you can get on-line safely to get the
updates.

If you run that on a Win98 machine it will do the specific Win98
updates. Bear in mind that it is now fairly old, so you will need to
follow with a check at regular Windows Update, but it will make a good
start

It (and the AV) are third party products, from CA (eTrust EZArmor).
Those are also currently available as a free years trial from
www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/

The regular Windows firewall is there same as ever in the SP1 version
in the main disk

The CD though is now getting out of date. In particular it does *not*
include the patch for Sasser.
