"Microsoft Outlook has encountered a problem..." Message Window

John Diener

I frequently have the message window shown below pop up while I'm on the
computer.

"Microsoft Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience"

It can happen whether or not the Outlook application is open. If the app is
open and I click "Close" the app may or may not close. I have gone through
the "Detect and Repair..." process on the Help menu, but the message
continues to appear. I have looked at the "...more information about..."
offered in the message window, but am not competent to interpret the
information provided.

Can someone guide me in solving this problem?

Thanks,

John Diener

And no-one here can interpret the message unless you give its contents.

sounds suspicously like another app is trying to load outlook, monitor
the instances of outlook.exe in task manager

make sure that you have all programs you dont need open to be closed

make sure you have an upto date antivirus engine running

make sure you have microsoft antispyware installed and running

it may also help to prevent outlook from auto connecting on open, if
you dont know how then create a new outlook profile with no account and
open and close outlook. In either case its easy from this to see how
you can diagnose or narrow down the problem

Alan,

I had to wait until the message window popped up again. This time I got the
following "Error Signature":

AppName: explorer.ese AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName:
ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.266.2180 Offset: 000111de

I was still unable to capture the technical information which was supposed
to be available in a Temp folder as a .txt file. I searched with the path
given but could not find the file, 6922_appcompat.txt.

Does this help? Do you know any tricks about finding the temp file when I
have another opportunity to capture it?

Thanks,

John Diener

The diagnostic file may be hidden, set explorer to see hidden files too.

The above may refer more to (unnamed version of) Windows- it doesn't
directly reference Outlook - (but that does not mean Outlook is the cause).
If XP you can check Windows system file integrity with system file checker-
it's worth a try. sfc is the program - I think 98 had something similar. sfc
/scannow in Start, Run, if you havent used it before.
