Microsoft Network Wizard Spooler Error?

G

Gus

Does Microsoft have a fix for the Spooler error I receive
at the end of trying to configure the Network Setup
Wizard? Also, can anyone give me a step by step procedure
on manually setting up my wireless network without using
the Wizard? I can't get the Wizard to complete without an
error even if I turn off the Spooler (Start-Run-cmd-type
net stop spooler) and/or disabling the Network Bridge. I
have Windows XP Home Edition on computer No.1, and
Windows ME on Computer No.2. Any help I get will be
greatly appreciated.

Greetings Gus,

First, take a look at the following MS KB article before following these
instructions. Try stopping the spooler service before setting up the home
network. Here's what you do.

1. Open a command prompt window.

2. Stop the spooler service - type "net stop spooler" (without quotes) and
hit the ENTER key.

3. Then setup the network. After you finish then you can restart the
service.

NOTE: You can restart the spooler service by typing "net start spooler"
(without quotes) or rebooting the machine.

Here's the MS KB Article:

Spooler Subsystem App Has Encountered a Problem and Needs to Close" and

Hiya Gus, this is interesting and to do more research into this, we require
more information.
Could you please provide us with:

1) The full text of the error message
2) From start to finish, what were the exact steps you took that resulted in
this failure?
3) What is your network setup? eg. how many machines, how are they
connected? etc.
4) Did you intentionally create the bridge? or did prior runs with the NSW
create it for you?
5) Did you attempt to run with wizard with a network connection with ICF
enabled? (the reason why we ask, is there is a known issue here)
6) What types of network connections does your machine have? eg. Ethernet,
Wireless, Bluetooth, Dial Up, Broadband? etc.

Thanks,

Hello Gus - it sounds like your computer #2 has connectivity to the internet
via wireless. So you should not need to run Network Setup Wizard on the
computer #1 anymore.

It appears that what you are missing is file & print sharing between the 2
computers. You should start from the troubleshooting page
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308007
and see what fails among all that it asks you to do.

You can also use the article
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...db-aef8-4bef-925e-7ac9be791028&DisplayLang=en
as a resource to tell you more about setting up file and print sharing
between XP and other Windows OS.
(all these articles are linked from the home networking portal at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/homenetworking/. I would recommend
keeping that on your favorites list)

Based on the info on these articles, if you are still having issues, please
respond back with detailed info from the results of the troubleshooting
article and we will help you from there.

Hi NetXPComm
Just to keep you interested, I went to
304040 "Description of File Sharing and Permission in
Windows XP," and I played that video on how to turn
Simple File Sharing on or off. I did exactly as it said,
and I don't have an option in that dialog box to do such
a thing. (My Computer- Tools- Folder Options-View). In
the video, it showed it on the bottom line. I have
Windows XP Home Edition. Does that make a difference?
Earlier in the article it did say that XP Home Edition
always has Simple File Sharing enabled! I appreciate all
the information you are supplying me. I'll go through the
rest of the things you asked me to do, and I'll get back
to you. My only concern is that, somehow, we are unable
to communicate with each other! That would really be a
let down! Keep up the good work.

wireless connection. The wireless router (D-Link DI- 514)
is wired to the back of computer No.1, and the light is
on. The wireless Ethernet (D-Link DWL-122) is connected
to the USB port of computer No.2. I checked with D- link
to see if the router and Ethernet device was working
properly. They went through a diagnostic test and assured
me it was working properly. As far as ICS is concerned, I
used the Network Setup Wizard to configure the Network,
and if I'm not mistaken, it sets up ICS
automatically.
I
have a Dial-up Connection.

No.4
I have run the Wizard (It seems a thousand times) with
different configurations (too many to remember).I
ran
the

Bridge deleted. When I stop the spooler (start-run- cmd-
net stop spooler), I can complete the Wizard
successfully. However, my computers still can't see each
other.

No.5
I don't understand this question. You will have to help
me out here.

No.6
I believe I have answered this question in No.3.
I'll
to
give you a bit of what I see in My Network Places- Network

which
is
Computer no.1's name. Continuing on, in Other Places-

Hiya Gus, this is interesting and to do more research
into this, we require
more information.
Could you please provide us with:

1) The full text of the error message
2) From start to finish, what were the exact steps you
took that resulted in
this failure?
3) What is your network setup? eg. how many machines,
how are they
connected? etc.
4) Did you intentionally create the bridge? or did prior
runs with the NSW
create it for you?
5) Did you attempt to run with wizard with a network
connection with ICF
enabled? (the reason why we ask, is there is a known
issue here)
6) What types of network connections does your machine
have? eg. Ethernet,
Wireless, Bluetooth, Dial Up, Broadband? etc.

Thanks,

Hello Gus - it sounds like your computer #2 has connectivity to the internet
via wireless. So you should not need to run Network Setup Wizard on the
computer #1 anymore.

It appears that what you are missing is file & print sharing between the 2
computers. You should start from the troubleshooting page
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en- us;308007
and see what fails among all that it asks you to do.

You can also use the article

Greetings Gus,

Are your computer on the network configured for DHCP? If so, you don't need
to enable ICS on the host computer. You'll tell it to obtain an ip address
automatically. There is a page written with details here.

Windows XP - Internet Connection Sharing
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/

If you are still having problems, you can try the following.

Go into Device Manager and uninstall any network adapters that you may be
using then reboot and let Windows detect them. Then setup the network again
from scratch to see if this will help. Run the XP's Network Wizard again to
fully enable file and printer sharing.

Are you still receiving the spooler error? If so, spooler errors are
referred to a printer. If have helped someone in another post in the
newsgroups by telling them to uninstall their printer, then run the Network
Setup Wizard and reinstall the printer after the network is setup.

on. The wireless Ethernet (D-Link DWL-122) is
connected
to the USB port of computer No.2. I checked with D-
link
to see if the router and Ethernet device was working
properly. They went through a diagnostic test and
assured
me it was working properly. As far as ICS is
concerned, I
used the Network Setup Wizard to configure the
Network,
and if I'm not mistaken, it sets up ICS
automatically.
I
have a Dial-up Connection.

No.4
I have run the Wizard (It seems a thousand times)
with
different configurations (too many to remember).I
ran
the
Wizard with the recommended settings, and also with
the
Bridge deleted. When I stop the spooler (start- run-
cmd-
net stop spooler), I can complete the Wizard
successfully. However, my computers still can't see
each
other.

No.5
I don't understand this question. You will have to
help
me out here.

No.6
I believe I have answered this question in No.3.
I'll
to
give you a bit of what I see in My Network Places-
Network
Tasks-View Workgroup Computers-Server(D8924V31),
which
is
Computer no.1's name. Continuing on, in Other
Places-
Microsoft Windows Network-Mshome-Other Places- Entire
Network-Microsoft Terminal Services, Microsoft
Window
Network, and Web Client Network. I don't see
anything
about being connected to Computer No.2 I hope this
gives
you some idea of what I'm up against. Thank you for
your
willing to help!

Hiya Gus, this is interesting and to do more
research
into this, we require
more information.
Could you please provide us with:

1) The full text of the error message
2) From start to finish, what were the exact steps
you
took that resulted in
this failure?
3) What is your network setup? eg. how many
machines,
how are they
connected? etc.
4) Did you intentionally create the bridge? or did
prior
runs with the NSW
create it for you?
5) Did you attempt to run with wizard with a
network
connection with ICF
enabled? (the reason why we ask, is there is a
known
issue here)
6) What types of network connections does your
machine
have? eg. Ethernet,
Wireless, Bluetooth, Dial Up, Broadband? etc.

Thanks,

Does Microsoft have a fix for the Spooler error I
receive
at the end of trying to configure the Network
Setup
Wizard? Also, can anyone give me a step by step
procedure
on manually setting up my wireless network
without
using
the Wizard? I can't get the Wizard to complete
without
an
error even if I turn off the Spooler (Start- Run-
cmd-
type
net stop spooler) and/or disabling the Network
Bridge.
I
have Windows XP Home Edition on computer No.1,
and
Windows ME on Computer No.2. Any help I get will
be
greatly appreciated.

Hi Eric
After going to Start-Run-cmd and typing net stop spooler,
I was able to run the Network Setup Wizard successfully,
but I still couldn't connect to my client computer.
People on the newsgroup have been trying very hard to
help me with this problem by referring me to web sites
that deal with Networking. I've been to so many web site,
and downloaded so much information, and tried so many
things, that I am completely confused! One other thing
that confuses me is that sometimes these documents show
dialog boxes of what my configuration should look like,
but the dialog box itself looks different than the one on
my computer! I have XP Home Edition. Some documents don't
differentiate between XP Home Edition and XP Pro. Not
only that, but I can't make my Wizard complete any more.
As I stated to you in the last message, I get the Error
message "Cannot enable share access. Error 799: Internet
Connection Sharing(ICS) cannot be enabled due to an IP
address conflict. ICS requires the host be configured to
use 192.168.0.1. Please ensure that no other client on
the network is configured to use 192.168.0.1." Your
advice to me was to uninstall any network adapters,
reboot and let windows detect them. That scares me!
Something like that is going a bit over my head. Can I
run into any trouble that can't be fixed by doing that? I
certain don't want to make matters worse. Thanks for
staying with me Eric.
Gus

Hi Net XP or Eric
I'm at a point that I don't know what to do about. On Win
Xp the host, I'm trying to run the Network Setup Wizard,
but I get the message "Cannot enable share access. Error
799: Internet Connection Sharing(ICS) cannot be enabled
due to an IP address conflict. ICS requires the host be
configured to use 192.168.0.1. Please ensure that no
other client on the network is configured to use
192.168.0.1." Can you give me a step by step on how to
find out where the conflict is. My client computer's IP
is 192.168.0.2. what else could be giving the conflict?

It's true, that option only exists in Pro. Shouldn't stop you from sharing
files though.

I'll go
through
the
rest of the things you asked me to do, and I'll get back
to you. My only concern is that, somehow, we are unable
to communicate with each other! That would really be a
let down! Keep up the good work.

Hello Gus - it sounds like your computer #2 has
connectivity to the internet
via wireless. So you should not need to run Network
Setup Wizard on the
computer #1 anymore.

It appears that what you are missing is file & print
sharing between the 2
computers. You should start from the
troubleshooting
page
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx? scid=kb;en-
us;308007
and see what fails among all that it asks you to do.

You can also use the article
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?
FamilyID=87c0a6db-aef8-4bef-925e-
7ac9be791028&DisplayLang=en
as a resource to tell you more about setting up
file
and
print sharing
between XP and other Windows OS.
(all these articles are linked from the home networking
portal at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/homenetworking/. I
would recommend
keeping that on your favorites list)

Based on the info on these articles, if you are still
having issues, please
respond back with detailed info from the results of the
troubleshooting
article and we will help you from there.

Eric and NetXPCom[MSFT]
I believe my ICF was disabled, to make sure I did it
all
over again! I made sure ICF was disabled, and I turned
off the spooler. I started the Wizard, turned on
Computer
No.2 and made sure I was on the Internet. It asks "do
you
want to use the shared connection?" I Clicked "Yes."
Next
page says, "Your computer has multiple connections." I
chose "Let me choose" (From Microsoft's article
283429).
I cleared the check box to "1394 Connection 1394
Network
Adapter." The other option that was left checked
was "Local Area Connection Intel(R)Pro/100VE Network
Connection." Next, Computer Description: Sever.
Computer
Name: D8924V31. Next, Workgroup Name: MSHOME. Next,
In "Ready to apply Network Settings," under "settings"
is
as follows: Internet Connection Settings: (nothing
entered). Connecting via ICS through: Unknown Internet
Connection Sharing. Network Settings: (nothing
entered).
Computer Description: Server. Computer Name: D8924V31.
Workgroup Name: MSHOME. And on the bottom: "The Shared
Documents folder and any printers connected to this
computer have been shared." Next, "You are almost
done."
I selected "Just finish the Wizard" and it completed
successfully. I restarted my spooler and enabled my
ICF.
I have Ad-aware 6, Spybot-Search & Destroy, and McAfee
Anti-virus installed.
Nothing has changed from the information I sent
you
the
last time. I still can't see computer No.2!

Gus, did you have the Windows XP Internet Connection
Firewall enabled when
you ran the Network Wizard? The Windows XP's firewall
can easily be
disabled/enabled manually as shown in the steps below.
