Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 817357: Autoplay & Media Type not working

I am experiencing the exact problems described in this KB
article. Autoplay is not functioning, Media type is not
updated in My Comupter and consequently XP does not
recognise that I have a writeable CD in the drive when
trying to write to the CD Drive. Otherwise the drive works
fine.

MS say there is a fix for this but I have to pay for it
(through paid support) or wait for the Service Pack
(when ??).

Does anyone know if there is anotehr way to get it ?

You need to read the complete article:

"NOTE: In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for
support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional
determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The typical
support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that
do not qualify for the specific update in question.

Tell the Tech support person you have this problem and need the fix.
Ask no other questions, mention no other issues. This only, and they
waive the charge.
