Microsoft Java? Is it available in Vista? (not sun java!)

I need to get a new pc for work purposes, and my employer still uses the old
Microsoft java for its servers. I can not get SUN JAVA to work (I have tried
and had my companies techsupport email me the Microsoft java instead to get
onto the servers). Does vista still have the old microsoft java in it, or
available to download? Will the old Microsoft java that works on XP work on
Vista? I can not risk loosing thousands of dollars not knowing this answer
and taking the chance on VISTA, without knowing for sure that I will be able
to do this. Thanks...

Are you referring to the Sun JVM 6? I have it running fine on Vista here.
Earlier versions have issues.

Dude - find another job. How many years has it been that the MS JVM has been
unsupported? I'm thinking at least 3 but maybe 5. This seems like an IT
organization that is either incompetent or completely out of control.
Neither can signal a good future.

As another alternative just in case something is keeping you from securing
your future, get your new Vista system and run XP (or 98) in a Virtual
Machine to support this legacy system.

Hi there,

I had a problem with the default J2RE 5.0 ver 6 install when trying to load
Borland's Interbase. I installed J2RE-1_4_2_13 and it worked fine.

Cheers

Well I have to use Microsoft VM because my the company I work for is
unwilling to upgrade to SUN java... for whatever reason! I am not going to
quit my job just because MS cant or wont upgrade their older software to be
compatible. I work for a fortune 20 company, and they probably spent
millions on MS Java, and like so many other companies, they dont see a need
to upgrade what has been working, to make it work on a new OS. After all, MS
should be making it EASIER to move over to a new OS, and not harder! I make
way too much money to want to get a different job... at this time....

That being said, If I cant get VISTA to work with what I need, I will just
have to either dualboot XP or not get VISTA at all and stay with XP! Its as
simple as that!

So if MS wants my business, and that of others, they have to be more willing
to get their act together and make Vista more backward compatible with
programs that at least work with XP. After all, more than 60% of people are
using XP, and probably will for the next 2 years...

Sun Java is simply not an option! I already contacted my companies support
and they use Microsoft Java! I have both installed, but have to switch to MS
java, reboot and then loginto my companies site to do my work from home.
Then if I want to use SUN JAVA, I click it, reboot and then I can use it!
But my issue, and the whole reason for my question is:

Will MS Java work on Vista, if I install the same one that came with XP?

Thanks

I doubt it. I certainly hope not. While I appreciate the pain you are
feeling, the Microsoft JVM used to be a reasonable choice but has been
obsolete for so long that it is now relatively speaking an awful item of
code. It's _very_ insecure and absolutely does not support the current JAVA
platform specs at all properly.

Not to mention the MS version no longer being supported thanks to Sun makes
the MS version very insecure and vulnerable. Your company would do well to
wake up and change tactics as they are only hurting themselves and their
customers with this practice. Blaming MS for this is just plain stupid as if
they had a choice they probably would still have their own version of Java.

Blame the problem on Sun. Then tell your fortune 20 company to upgrade their
software.

But if they are a fortune 20 company they already know where the problem
originates from.

The bottom line is that ms originally did not abide by terms it agreed
to when using sun java under license. Sun sued and the courts agreed
with sun, forcing ms to abandon its version (after a specific time
frame). Ms then attempted to not bundle sun java in xp at all, and was
sued again by sun. Sun prevailed and ms was ordered to include sun java
in xp. What you are seeing now is due to the judgements and settlements
from these suits. This url has the details should you wish to read it:

Mr. Vista

"upgrade to SUN java" - very appropriate choice of words.

dualboot - end of story.
