Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem.....

I've been getting this frustrating message a lot lately, on two separate
computers with nothing in common but the cable modem and Win98_SE. Different
m-boards, different CPU's, different everythings.

I've been using PC's online for about ten years, and I've never had this
problem before. Could it be a result of recent Windows Updates being quirky?

Or a virus?

Norton Anti-Virus hasn't detected any problems, and I've got a good firwall.

One computer got so bad I had to wipe the drive and re-install everything.

I have been having this problem for over a week and no one
can tell me what is wrong. I have spybot. I ran spybot.
Still have the problem. I completely reinstalled IE6.
Still have the problem. I have already had to wipe my
hard drive 4 times since Nov. I am really getting
pissed. Dell can't answer the problem. Microsoft refuses
to unless I hand over cash. Does anyone have a REAL
answer?

Same problem. IE doesn't close gracefully, remains in the
task manager, and eventually generates a DW15.exe process
that throws up the error. Any Ideas?

I ran spybot, and killed off Aureate. That fixed the
problem. Uninstalling/re-installing didn't. Check the
registry
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Bro
wserHelperObjects. If you have entries there you may have
the same problem I did. If spybot didn't find anything,
try ad-aware. Do a search for "%systemroot%
\winnt\related.htm" That was Alexa on my system. Spybot
did kill them--and the problem

Ken,
A few other things you might try.
1. Run repair on IE.
2. Disable, for diagnostic purposes, other programs that are running in the
background. Something like a firewall, ad-blocker, AV, security program,
toolbar, etc may need to be reinstalled- or not reinstalled.
3. Work through the preliminary steps at

See if there's malware that the programs didn't find.

The problem seems to have cleared up on one computer (not sure why) and on
the other one I have done a fresh install of OS and apps. So far it's OK
too.

The problems had cleared up (not sure why), but then I had to reinstall
Win98 because some files got corrupted. Then the IE problem returned.

But I think I found a permanent solution: I downloaded the Mozilla1.6
browser from mozilla.org.

I love it, and it seems very stable, with nary a problem so far.
