Microsoft iexplorer and updates

You can save the updates from the update site under "catalog"

I went to the windows updates site. Got scanned there are 22 updates for
me. I then went to the catalog. Ok. Just where are they in the catalog?
By clicking on windows updates it takes me right back to the site that
wants to scan my computer.

Thanks

I just went to download the updates. 'Bout 5 megs.
And you made sure you don't have the same OS as the one you are updating
for.

The procedure is as follows. I added a couple of things to make it, I hope,
clearer.

Tip: Make the destination directory smaller that 50 characters (Why I don't
know - But if longer it will warn you to make another eg.
c:\downloads\Win98UD)

a) Go to the Windows update site.
b) Choose personalize Windows update in the left frame.
c) Put a check mark in "Display the link to Windows Update Catalog".
d) There's a new link to Windows Update Catalog under See Also.**( in Left
Frame)
e) Click on the link. (Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating
systems)
f) Make your selection of operating system.(dropdowm menu in center)
g) Make your selection updates.(I had 58 + 1 + 1)
h) Download as appropriate.

I copied them to 4 1.44meg floppies
HTH I use Win98 1st ED. most of the time.

First...... it's alot more stable
Second....... it loads things a heck of alot quicker
Third...... it doesn't crash half as much
Fourth.... you can easily remove it
Fifth...... the Java is installed with it as standard, saving the time
needed for 6.x users to go to the Sun site and download Java.
...... need I go on?.

No need to be a smartass ("need I go on?") -- it was a legit question.

No problem... I am using v5.00, you see, and was wondering if moving
up to v5.5 was worth it, hence my question. :)

Oh it's worth it without a doubt (I've tried all of the others and
personally, didn't like them... for the reasons I mentioned earlier)

the option of using Sun Java for IE 6?

Aren't they the same thing?

Absolutely not.

Steven, IE 5.5 may "work for you" but it was such a buggy, insecure build
that Microsoft swept it under the rug and wants to pretend that it never
happened. Almost every week there was a new vulnerability discovered.

Maybe you aren't interested or worried about security, but I am.

Anyway, sorry to hear you're having a bad week.

Only just worse than IE6 then <gg>

On the contrary, security is a primary concern to me. However,
unfortunately, m hard drive doesn't contain enough space for me to switch to
a non-IE based browser (and before anyone mentions Opera, I wouldn't touch
it with a 30000 foot barge pole!)

hehe, tis oks..... As Yazz said.... "the only way is up"..... <gg> (she lied
through her teeth on that one.... cause it's not bleedin true, lol)

Man, you have to try Firebird.

If you have enough room for IE, you have enough for Firebird.

I'm testing Firebird at the moment and it's seriously cool!
Small setup, works with all my IE favourites (where Opera
didn't!), goes back/forward in cache INSTANTLY (why has IE
never been able to do that?), and loads pages ultra-fast.

Been impressed so far to enable it's "Default Browser" option!

You can change its ugly red icon using Resourcehacker.
I did that last night, and Firebird is one of my favorite browsers,

I tried Avant browser and MYIE2 too, and what I can say about that is that
Avant browser uninstalled without problems, MyIE2 needed some manual
cleaning up afterwards.

Opera 7.5 beta is great.

Here for IE, various versions. Updates you can get at Microsoft.
***********
The file sizes for those downloads are way way off what they should be. (IE
5 for instance is over 60MB)
***********

http://www.skyzyx.com/downloads/

These are not full versions, rather, they are standalone versions.
They shouldn't be used as your primary browser, but are terribly
useful for web designers/developers who need to test multiple versions
of IE at once.

With these standalone's, you can run IE 3, 4, 5, 5.5, and 6
simultaneously.

Ok, what's Resourcehacker, and where do you get it? A search turned up
nothing but German pages and they were all about "warez, cracks, viren,
illegal, hack" etc.

I do not like the Firebird icon and have always wanted to change it.

Start the program, select the exe file you want to change, find the icon,
change it for another.

If you have a nice ico file ready in a known location it helps.

I'm a big fan of Resource Hacker[1], but why reinvent the wheel.

Yes, I know that there is another way, I found that link too.
But I just like using resource hacker , you never know what else you find
that you can change :)

....or break. }:O)
