when trying to run the chkdsk /f command. an error

lock drive. it then asks if i want to run chkdsk at the
next restart, and also states the volume is in use by
another...any ideas? i was attempting to defrag the hard
drive but it states there is not enough free space to do
that? how can i free up disk space? thanks

You need at least 15% free space for defrag to work. You
can delete temp files (run disk clean-up) and copy data
files to a CD-R. Delete unneeded/unused programs. Then
defrag.

Hi,

A drive in use cannot be dismounted, therefore the only way to run chkdsk /f
on it is to schedule it to occur on a system restart.

How do you get free space? Delete unneeded files, uninstall unused software.

You can only run this on the disk where windows is by accepting those
points and doing it at a reboot

The defrag provided needs 15% of free space on the drive before it will
work. SHort of getting a third party tool (eg the one at www.raxco.com
I can recommend) use Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools -
Disk CLeanup. In particular you can probably save quite a bit by using
the More Options to reduce to just the most recent Restore point
