CHKDSK Issue

Presently experiencing an issue where I cannot copy or move files.
Cannot move file. cannot read from the source file or disk
CHKDSK has revealed the following:
Free disk space marked as allocated in the master file table <MFT> bitmap
Free disk space marked as allocated in the volume bitmap

The recommendation is to run chkdsk /F which should be run after restart
because the volume is in use. I've done this twice

Once while in windows -> run -> cmd -> chkdsk /F
Once while in safe mode with command prompt

Neither has succeeded. Advice sought

If this was my machine then I would copy the whole damaged
partition to a different disk or partition, format the damaged
partition, then copy the whole lot back again.

Of course you can't do this while Windows is active. The
exact method depends on the number of partitions you have,
the amount of disk space used, if this is a desktop or a laptop,
if you have access to a spare PC or a spare disk etc. If you're
not a technical person then you should ask a friend for help.

When you say "has not succeeded", do you mean:
- chkdsk (actually, autochk) does not start
- it does start and run, but error persists
?

If so, then check the physical HD using HD Tune (free, Windows-based,
needs NT-family OS such as XP or 2000) from www.hdtune.com

What I'd do is boot off a Bart CDR, first do the HD Tune "slow'
surface scan, check HD temperature is < 50C at least (best < 40C) and
that SMART details are OK. Then I'd do ChkDsk /F from there, which
should work as Bart doesn't access C: all the time (it runs off CDR).

Bart doesn't come with HD Tune built-in, but it integrates easilly.

Google( Bart PE ) - I'd hate to maintain NTFS-based XP without it!
