Bob,
Other than that, how was your day? :)

My day?
How about my week!?<bEg>

The original problem is explained here:
http://www.windowsitpro.com/articles/index.cfm?articleid=26310
It's a configuration problem with ZAP. Adding the windows update site to the
privacy section and granting appropriate permissions solves the problem. All
else was collateral damage.

The BSOD in safe mode is explained here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;261807
Casued by Directcd.
It's a testament to the stability of W2K that in all the years I've run this
system I've never had the need for safe mode or msconfig (borrowed from
XP<g>).

Now the plan is to get the drive letter problem resolved (attempting to boot
XP results in a request to insert the W2K cd to repair the system), data
mining all the goodies I can find in the trashed install of W2K, getting
this instance of W2K shaped up the way I want it., and getting ready for a
beta test of another product that's been mentioned in these newsgroups
(Shhhhhh...OneCare).

I suppose I should send an email to Sandeep Hooda letting him know what I've
found and my intentions to abandon the trashed W2K partition. BTW, nothing
I've said here should reflect badly on Mr. Hooda. A quiet restful peaceful
weekend can sometimes be more productive than a week of hard work.<g>

A second BTW, any help with the drive letter problem would be appreciated.
It's a multiboot system with W98, 2xW2K, and XP Pro in 4 partitions. There
are 2 hard drives and drive F has been the first partition on the second
drive. Drive F is now the cd-rom which was formerly drive G..

Is there anything better than Ranish partition manager for this sort of
problem?

Very respectfully,
Bob Vanderveen
