Microsoft announcement that there is Final Version 1592 to upgrade

Hello. Vince here.
I am under the impression that Microsoft has not sent out notifications to
current users of WD that there is a final version 1592 available. I perfer
waiting for this than jumping the gun and downloading WD version 1592
manually from Microsoft.com website.
Does anyone know how WD will let us know that there is a new version to
upgrade to? Will it come on your desktop? Will you have to open WD for the
program to let you know of the upgrade? or will it come from Microsoft Update
page?
Thanks.

Attempting to recall the last time this happened, in the course of the
beta--the update was flagged in the UI of the program--on the top of the
home page. Additionally, the program icon appeared in the system tray to
draw attention to the need to open it and see what action was needed.

I think there was a button, which led to roughly the right download page.

I'd expect something similar.

I don't know if it might be offered as an optional download at Microsoft
Update or not.

Thanks Bill Sanderson for your prompt reply.

As I understand it, all updates will delivered in the normal time i.e.
on second Tuesday of the month. This means you should get update
notification on or before 14th November 2006.

Actually, this is not what I would expect. The second Tuesday grouping of
updates is for critical security patches. I don't expect Microsoft to
dilute or confuse the issues surrounding those critical updates by adding
other things to the mix, even though Windows Defender is a security-related
application.

There may be bandwidth considerations as well--critical patches are more
important to get in place on customers machines than Windows Defender.

So--I don't know how they'll time the update announcement--but I wouldn't
expect it to coincide with the second Tuesday announcements.

On occassions I got signature updates with so called "critical security
patches" so why differentiate? WD is critical as far as security of OS
is concerned and reputation of MS. People laugh when we tell them that
MS is serious about security matters because they don't seem to see any
changes despite getting tons of updates every month!

If it is not on Second Tuesday then it has to be next week otherwise how
will people know how to get final version of WD. Surely, they can't
wait until 31st December 2006 when the beta expires!

For the record, I just ran a manual Windows Update on one of my office
systems, and absulutely *NO* Defender UI update was available. I did install
a new OS on my partner's laptop on Friday and received the non-beta version
in the course of installing 70-odd updates. Strange!

I'm thinking that unless you go out of your way to manually reinstall
Defender, it will not be updated until the 14th ... or at some earlier
arbitrary time that suits Microsoft's fancy. ;-)

Can you clarify what happened with the new OS install? Did you do a custom
or express scan?

I almost always do a "custom" scan. I wouldn't want to miss anything, ya
know. ;-)

A fresh installation of XP dose not contain any confusing "baggage" that
might make Windows Update think that a functional copy of Defender is
installed. Thus only the latest and greatest would be installed under such
circumstances.

I have since begun manually installing the new build OVER existing
installations with no ill-effects so far. I still have six or seven systems
to update though.

Thanks - Maybe I'll uninstall Defender on a system and see whether it is
offered.
