I bought a (very cheap) microphone to use on my Dell, but it didn't work, so
I bought a more expensive one from Maplins - still no joy. I plugged in at
the front, and then I plugged it in at the back which did at least produce a
response from the machine which asked me to confirm it was a mike. I tried
the control panel, but the tester reports it can pick up nothing at all.
What am I missing here?

Ray,

A good place to check to make sure the mike is setup correctly is the 'Help
& Support' after clicking the 'Start' button. Type in microphone in the
search box, then click 'See Possible Speech Recognition Problems' for a
litany of possible problems or setups.

Hi Drew

I have tried what you suggested, but in the instructions on setting up a
microphone there is this:
''To test the connection:
Open Speech in Control Panel.
Select the Speech Recognition tab. ''

Only there IS NO Speech Recognitioin tab!!

Should I contact Dell? Have they missed out a bit of the installation?

Ray,

If you use Office 2003, you'll need to open:

* Add/Remove Programs, find your Office 2003 listing, select 'Change'

* Click 'Add or Remove Features, click Next

* Check the 'Choose advanced customization of applications' box, click Next

* Expand (+) ''Choose update options for applications and tools', Select
'Office Shared Features'

* Expand (+) 'Alternative User Input', click 'Speech'

* select the type of installation you want

* Click 'Update'
