Microphone Troubleshooting

I have a Philips SBCHM200 microphone connected to my Realtek HD Audio (ALC
880) via the front pink jack.

The microphone is partially working as it clearly plays through the speakers
of the PC.

It appears on the list of Recording Devices on the Sound dialog and is
selected as the default device but when tested it plays through speakers but
the recording bars show no activity.

How can I get it to work for recording the audio? Help would be much
appreciated :D

Do you have the latest (ver. 1.77) Realtek HD Audio drivers installed?

NOTE: You should run the driver install twice: once to remove the old drivers
and again to actually install the new drivers. (Or manually uninstall in Device
Manager ***INCLUDING CHECKING THE BOX TO DELETE THE DRIVER FILES IN THE
UNINSTALL CONFIRMATION BOX***, and uninstall the Realtek HD Audio Driver in
Control Panel > Programs and Features.)

Also, have you right clicked on the Realtek RED Speaker icon in the Notification
Area of the Taskbar, selected Sound Manager and configured the microphone

Hi Cal Bear '66,

I have installed the latest (ver. 1.77) Realtek HD Audio drivers following
your steps.

I have configured the microphone to be the default input deviece and checked
the settings all seem to be in order.

Still not recording any audio activity and still playing through the
speakers only.

Which method did you use to install the new driver? Running the install twice,
or a manual uninstall before running the new driver install? And, I'm very
sorry, I left out that you must REBOOT either after running the new driver
install the first time or after manually uninstalling the driver and the
application in Programs and Features before installing the new driver.

Have you by any chance tried the REAR microphone input? And have you checked
out the settings in the Realtek HD Audio Manager in Control Panel or by right
clicking on the Red Speaker icon in the Notification Area?

Damn, I'm stumped. Both my Creative X-Fi and my Realtek HD Audio are working
beautifully here. But, this is the first time I have seen this particular
problem in these newsgroups.

Check out the REAR panel microphone input and post back, please.

What is the driver version in Device Manager?

Hi Cal Bear,

Thanks for your help so far :D

I ran the install twice and I have checked the REAR microphone input with
the same result.

I also tried running it on the installation of Win XP I have with the latest
versions of the drivers for windows XP with the same results.

Seems a bit dodgy. I have a feeling that it's something really simple I'm
missing.

Audio Driver version: 6.0.1.5480
Driver date: 11/09/07
Audio Codec: ALC880
