Microphone not working

I'm currently using realtek '97 onboard sound on my sis-748 motherboard
because my sound card wasn't supported, i got speaker output to work by
downloading drivers but have never been able to fix the microphone. if i open
Sound in control panel and click on recording devices the sound window
freezes completely and the only way to get rid of it seems to be end task.

Are these the drivers you are using?

Have you uninstalled the drivers completely (including checking the box to
remove driver files) in Device Manager, REBOOT, and then install the newer
drivers?
