Microphone Problems

i just built my own computer and im having microphone problems. My
microphone doesn't pick up anything and i don't know if it's the OS the
sound card or the microphone.

if possible test the microphone and card in another pc to rule those out (or
in) as the problem.

also dose the card appear in the device manager as working? can you hear
sounds?

are the mixer settings for the mike okay - make sure its not muted.
