I've got this. It's probably a sound card driver that's not fully developed
yet for Vista....

What sound card do you have?

Get the Vista drivers from the manufacturers website.

If you have a Soundblaster X-Fi card, the port for the mic is a shared port
which can also be used for a digital I/O connection. It may be that the port
is set to digital I/O mode by default. That was the case with mine, after
installing the last two X-Fi beta drivers for Vista. This can be resolved by
going into the Control Panel/Sounds area and configuring the mic as default
input device.

Took me forever to get my microphone to work. I'm not sure what you have to
do, but it has been that way with every Vista computer I've dealt with. I
think we are missing something, because I did eventually get mine to work
after much fuss.

Have you checked Control Panel > Sound > Recording to make sure that
your rear (or front) microphone is set as the default? Then have you
checked the microphone Properties > Levels to make sure the volume level
is OK? If so, you probably have the same no/low-volume microphone
problem that a growing minority of Vista users (including myself) have
been reporting, and the jury is still out as to what is causing this
problem: whether it has to do with audio drivers or Vista itself. Most
posters complaining of this issue (like myself) have been running into
this while trying to use Skype, but the problem is not limited to a
specific program. It has become fairly clear that, if you have this
issue using a microphone with one program while running Vista, you will
have this issue using a microphone with any program while running Vista.
The most people I've found discussing this issue in one forum is at:

http://forums.creative.com/creative...message.id=4300&view=by_date_ascending&page=1

or TinyURL: http://preview.tinyurl.com/2tslrt

You might want to read through the posts there to give you more insight
into this issue and to determine if it applies to your situation.
