Installed microphone on notebook not working

I just recently bought a notebook with Vista Home Premium installed. It has
a built in microphone but I can't get it to work. When I go to the sounds
options and click on the "Recording" tab it says the "No audio devices are
installed." But when I go to the "Playback" tab and choose properties and
increase the volume of the mic I get feedback noise from the speakers. So
I'm sure the hardware works. I've downloaded drivers from my notebook vendor
and they instructed me to download new winflash and BIOS settings. Nothing
happend. I brought it for check up and the thing is, when they change to an
XP OS the mic works and going back to Vista doesn't make it work. Is it the
drivers or just Vista? Hope someone can help.

Have you tried to right click on the Recording Devices window and selecting both
Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices to see if your microphone
shows up?

well if it works with xp and not with vista, it's a no brainier.
probably a driver problem or it could be vista disabling the mic in the
sound settings.

I'm not sure if I got you correctly. But when I right click on the sounds
icon I choose "recording device." There's really nothing to click because
all text are shadowed and and says "No audio devices are isntalled." Only
"playback devices" have options to click (speakers & Digital Output dvice).
In fact I can't even find anything with microphone in device manager.

What is your audio adapter? Have you gone to your computer manufacturer or the
audio adapter manufacturer for Vista drivers?

It's a SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio. Figured if it has something to
do with the OS then thought I could find help here instead. But I'll try
nevertheless to contact them too.

Not that its any help.

I also had probs with my microphone on vista. Firstly it picks up one thats
not there(actually its just the 3.5mm jack its picking up). Then when I use
my usb web cam and built in mic it picks it up but doesn't run unless I
enable it in the video player software that came with it.
