Microphone connections

I purchased a logitech external mic. Plugged it in and it worked fine, but
everytime i plugged it into my laptop Vista asked me what i was plugging in.
I always answered microphone. But the last time i did i told it microphone
but do not ask me this again figuring that Vista would remember my answer and
allow me to use the mic. Now the mic does not even register as being
connected. I have tryed to restore the system but have been unsuccessful 3
times. I just want to know how to get Vista to ask me about the conncetion
each time again, it was annoying but at least it worked. I have a project
that requires a voice over and no mic capabilities now.

have a look in your sound mixer properties

perhaps the mic input has been muted?

Look in Control Panel > Sound > Recording and make sure that the mic
(front or rear) is designated as default. If not, right-click it and
make it the default. Then go to the microphone's Properties > Levels and
make sure the volume settings are ok.

Seth,
I'm having the exact same problem. The only way I can get it to work
is to manually insert the microphone plug after each reboot. Not
ideal...worked fine in XP though.
