Microphone not Working

I have Windows XP Home Edition and a Plug and Play microphone. I'm trying to play multiplayer games with the microphone, but it doesn't work. When I test it in the options of the game it works, yet when I begin to actually play the game it doesn't want to. This goes for all games.

So I tried testing it in the control panel. Well, Microsoft doesn't support that evidently! There is nowhere I can test my microphone. When I search the help database, I only come across articles dealing with the speech recogniation software, not just the microphone itself. I've discovered, from that, to configure the microphone and test it I am forced to get the speech recognination software which is not included with the OS. This is pretty infuriating.

Is there ANY way at all that I can please get my dang microphone to work without buying any additional crud? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Try double clicking on the speaker icon (near the timelower right corner) ,
then click on options, properties,
make sure microphone is checked there. Then under mic volume, make sure mic
is not muted ( uncheck the mute box)
