Microphone doesn't work

Microphone works with a tape recorder but is not recognized/picked up on laptop during voice test. suggestions?

In the soundcard's settings be sure that the mic is not muted, that the
volume is turned up, and that the mic is enabled in the RECORD properties
window (if available).
