I get no sound through the microphone to either the sound
recorder or to voice-recognition software unless I run the
hardware check in the ESS sound card properties. I don't
have to complete the hardware check- just starting it solves
the problem. All entries in the device manager are OK.

To solve the problem I've tried reinstalling the sound card
driver via the device manager but that did no good.

I dual-boot XP and this problem does not occur on the other
XP and so I conclude this cannot be a hardware problem.

Your help is MUCH appreciated.
Thanks- bye- Larry

Any advise given is my attempt to show appreciation for all
the excellent help I've received here but I'm no MVP so it
may only apply NUGS (Normally, Usually, Generally, Sometimes :)

If you have more than one microphone socket on your machine (eg one front
and one back), then Windows might be configured to use one, rather than the
other.

Check your settings via

Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Volume (tab)
Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio (tab)

Greetings Jon & thank you for your response.

ESS is only option under both tabs:
Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Voice (tab)
Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio (tab)

When I installed ESS card, BIOS auto disabled AC97
onboard sound & I uninstalled driver for it. Did that
on both OS tho.

VR needs a strong signal- 18 with AC97 & 24 with ESS.

Comments/suggestions/corrections appreciated.
Thanks- bye- Larry

Any advise is my attempt to contribute more than I have received but I can only assure you that it works on my PC. GOOD LUCK.
