mic recording not working

hey i recently brought a mic for my computer. I have a
compaq presario 5000 series. I plugged it in and
everything and it doesnt work. I think it's something
wrong with my audio. For my playback and recording i have
soundmax. plz help thx

You need to check the Mic isn't set to "Mute"

Click on the sound icon in the Systray (bottom right of screen)..... Click
on the Options button and then on Properties. Put a check mark in the
Adjust Volume for Recording section....Ensure that Microphone has a check
mark in its box. Click on OK.

Now the Microphone should show up in the first screen (Record Control).
Ensure it's got a check mark in the Select Button.
