microphone still not working

I still can't hear the audio from my mic. It is plugged in correctly and I
can use it to record in sound recorder. However, I can not hear anything from
the mic while I am recording. Upon playback, I hear my recording just fine.
The volume level shows up that it is active and working. So I know the mic
works and the input is correct...

What else could be the problem?

This may sound silly, but are you sure that you have the microphone non-muted in your volume
playback settings? By default you shouldn't hear yourself when you speak. If you're unsure
if its muted, click Start, Run, enter "sndvol32" and click OK. Then check the Microphone
input and unselect Mute if selected.
