Hi all

I've just set up my new machine running XP, and whilst it's without a doubt a great improvement on Windows 98, one little thing is irritating me. Whenever I connect to my ISP, Windows Messenger automatically signs in, which I don't want it to do do. Could someone please tell me how to turn this feature off. Thanks a lot

Greetings Dan,

You have two options. Firstly, instead of leaving Windows Messenger running, simply close it
when you're not using it (right-click the Windows Messenger icon and choose Exit), and
disable it from loading when you start your computer (open up the main Windows Messenger
window, click the Tools menu, then Options, then Preferences, then uncheck 'Run this program
when Windows starts' or 'Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts' (depending on version)
and click OK.

Secondly, you can leave it running, but you can just remove your saved Passport information
in your Windows XP account, so it can't sign in automatically (although you'll need to type
your login/password everytime you wish to sign in). To do so, click the Start Button, then
click the Control Panel. Then, click User Accounts in the Control Panel. Select your account
name, and then on the left side of the screen, under Related Tasks, click 'Manage my Network
Passwords'. In the window that opens, click the Passport.Net\* (Passport) entry and click
'Remove'.
