live messenger (the latest version is 2008, build 8.5.1288.816) integrates
with MICROSOFT UPDATE (not windows update but an extended version of that)
and when a new final is released you will get it via auto update.
If you avoid this, at some point older versions cannot log in, and you are
promted to do a forced update.
I always keep my eyes on updates about everything(*)... a good site for

(*) I always use the latest versions of all applications. There has been
only one exception in all these years.
WINDOWS VISTA! Vista is so crap that I avoid using it as a workstation OS.
