"Messenger"

Start\Run\msconfig\System Configuration Utility\Services tab.

1. I have a service called "Messenger" that is running. Is this
something to do with Windows Messenger, which I don't use? If so, can I
uncheck it to stop it from running?

2. I remember having to do something like that as well as deleting a file
(q something, I think it was) in Win 98 to disable an earlier version. Is
it necessary to do something similar in XP?

Thanks.

PS: I should have mentioned that I have Windows Messenger disabled in
programs like Outlook, Outlook Express, and anywhere else I may have come
across it when I first began using XP.
