Messanger for XP Version 4.7 & MSN Messanger 6

Tigerian

I have XP home. It comes ready loaded with version 4.7
of Messenger. I upgraded to Version 6.0 Messenger as per
the instructions on the Microsoft downloads site. Now I
have Messenger 4.7 loading from the start and blocking
Messenger 6.0. I have to close Messanger 4.7 and then
login with Messenger 6.0. I have deselected the load
from start check box in the contents. Every time I try
to get rid of Messenger 4.7 or even just exit it, it
displays the message that Messenger 6.0 is using it! How
can I configue it so that only Messenger 6.0 starts up
and is my default messenger. Ah also I have 2 Messenger
symbols in my system tray (Maybe it's just me but that
really winds me up!!!!). Any ideas????

Greetings Tigerian,

Do you happen to have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging
scanning" feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and display
this behavior. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in
the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click
Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

Please note that MSN Messenger 6 is not the UPGRADE for WINDOWS Messenger
4.7.. WINDOWS Messenger 5 is the upgrade..
