Messaging interface returned unknown error when using 'search'

Having used microsoft outlook (Office Proffessional 03) for some time, I am
reliant on the 'find' box in the title bar to locate old e-mails

This week all attempts to use the 'seach' or 'find' functions (whether from
pull down menus or the find box) yield only the following error message:
"The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. if the problem
persists re-start Outlook"

The problem does persist. Re-starting Outlook makes no difference. Any
suggestions re cause or cure would be greatly appreciated.
