message window goes to background

My pc frozen while I was trying to send an Adobe PDF attachment via Outlook
and I did an end task on both programs. After I rebooted and launched
Outlook, it came up slowly. I moved about 1.4 GB of messages out of the
current personal folders file into alternate or archive pst files. I am now
unable to open any messages. Messages are coming in and and can see them in
the preview pane but when I try to open messages, they go into the background
and I'm unable to bring them up. I can select File, Close All Items and they
do close.
I am also unable to open messages in the alternate pst files.
Please... any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. I use this for work and
home.

do a detect and repair on outlook (office diagnostics in 2007) and reboot.
if it still fails, we need to know the version of outlook and windows and
what types of email account you use.

I'm running Office Standard Edition 2003, Windows XP Pro. It's an Earthlink
mailbox. I tried to run Detect and Repair from within Outlook 2003 and it
started loading an installer then failed with the following: (yellow
exclamation) Error 1919. Errir configuring ODBC data source: MS Access
Database, ODBC error 6: Component not found in the registry. Verify that the
file MS Access Database exists and that you can access it. (Cancel, Retry,
Ignore).

Thank you,
Loretta
