I re-installed my Cannoscan hardware (scanner) and software after removing
it entirely from my system. The message I now get indicates that the mscms.dl
is not found. What is this file and why do I get this message now as the
scanner worked previously without any problem. Any help appreciated.

Poor software removal routine, removing too much.
Any help appreciated.

Install this update which contains the latest version of "mscms.dll":
"Security Update for Windows XP (KB901214)"

I installed Security Update KB901214 and still get the same message. I
removed and re-installed the software. Still I get the same message "looking
for mscms.dll
I also downloaded the latest driver for Canoscan. Also this did not help. Is
there any other way to solve this? Is this perhaps due to automatic updates
by Microsoft?
I hope that you cen help me further.

Search your drive/s for that file and repost the folders where "mscms.dll"
is present.

Third-party drivers are not supposed to replace lost WinXP system files.
Is this perhaps due to automatic updates by Microsoft?

That's not very likely.

Sorry Detlev for my lack of knowledge. I did find 4 mscms.dll files. Two in
blue and two in black. The latter one seems to be the one I downloaded.
However, I do not understand what you mean by "repost" . Is that the same as
replacing? I am really struggling.

What's the name of the folders (eg. C:\Windows\System32) where the two
black files are located and what particular file version (eg. 5.1.2600.2709)
do these files have?

This means simply to post another message with the names of the folders
where "mscms.dll" is present. The next step depends on that information
and since there are multiple locations apparently, the corresponding file
versions should be reposted as well.

I have found the following files, all in the WINDOWS directory:

$NtServicePackUninstall$
$NtUnistallKB901214$
ServicePackfiles\i386
$hf_mig$\KB901214\SP2QFE
$NtServicePackUninstall$\KB901214\SP2QFE
$NtUninstallKB901214\KB901214\SP2QFE

I hope this helps in the investigation

Copy the file "mscms.dll" from the \ServicePackfiles\i386 to the
\Windows\System32 folder and repost if this resolved the problem.

Thank you very much. This solved the problem and the Canoscan is again
working. I'm very grateful. Maybe I learned something in the process. Once
again, thanks!
