Message "Service Module has encountered a problem and needs to clo

I receive this message when my Norton backup 'Save and Restore 2.0' program
tries to access my external drive on the network in order to backup my
C-Drive.
It also displays another message "UNABLE TO CONNECT TO AGENT SERVICE....".
Norton technical support states that there is nothing wrong with the norton
program and that the problem may lie with Windows or the network. I am
running Windows XP
Can somebody help?
